Ever since the Egyptian Red Crescent was founded in 1912, during the Libyan-Italian war, it has played a pivotal role in the various humanitarian and relief fields, specially in cases of armed conflict or disasters, besides its role in dissemination of the noble principles of the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent. During the past years, the Egyptian Red Crescent changed its strategy from the concept of charity to the broader dimension of comprehensive social development.  Its performance covered various social, health, educational, cultural and economic fields. This was conducted through its branches, which are spread nationwide. Activities of the Egyptian Red Crescent stemmed from its sense of responsibility, belief in the importance of humanitarian work and in capitalization of the role of civil society. These activities were performed in response to the needs and aspirations of the citizens, who have a strong bond of confidence with the Egyptian Red Crescent coupled with a mutual feeling of love and support. The Egyptian Red Crescent has introduced numerous pioneering programs for community development both in urban and rural areas, which gained recognition and appreciation of the international community. These activities contributed to the promotion of the quality of life, social and cultural standards of the people and highlighted the aesthetic and environmental aspects especially in squatter areas.
