Al-Nahda

The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) played a great role in the development project of Al Nahda city. This role started after the earthquake of October 1992. The earthquake was considered a great disaster, since thousands of people have been killed, and injured, and 25000 families were deemed homeless.

ERC took responsibility for this project. ERC called for all the civil society's efforts to work under the umbrella of ERC. A plan was assigned to respond to this disaster and to provide all means to care for the victims.

A group of ERC volunteers was formed to do the continuous follow up of the services provided and the project's programs being executed. ERC activities started in Nahda city by caring for 13.000 displaced families. During the following years, more families were reallocated to Nahda city, where the population increased from 13,000 to 37,000 families in 2003. In 2008, the number of families reached 52,000 families. This expansion included different groups of the society.

ERC established a Health and Social center to provide all the required services for the citizens. A second floor was added to the center in 2005 to provide all means of health care and awareness through specialized clinics, for free or nominal prices.

ERC trained 240 community health workers in order to raise health awareness in the city through weekly meetings for women. They were selected according to specific criteria. ERC added to its role the mission of developing women's vocational skills in the city. A sewing center for women was established to help in raising their income.

Eighteen literacy classes were opened each year to eradicate illiteracy for people deprived of education. These classes were established to serve more than 13,000 students.

ERC also participated in improving the schools' environment in the city. It also paid the school fees for some students at the different educational stages.

For a better future of prosperity in terms of improving children’s capabilities and development, two clubs were established providing a variety of children's books. ERC hired specialists to help develop the children's different talents.

ERC took care of the senior citizens by establishing a club that provides integrated care for them. It also established a community-based rehabilitation project for the blind with the cooperation of Model Center for the blind.

ERC adopted a job training program and provided job opportunities for youth in the fields of carpeting, pluming, welding and electricity. With the cooperation of the Governorate of Cairo, ERC also established several minor projects through allocating 250 industrial and commercial spaces for the citizens in addition to financial aid to execute these projects.

Cairo governorate participated with ERC by providing public services such as a transportation network to connect Nahda city with other places and to facilitate transportation for its inhabitants.
