The Spanish Red Cross granted the former Secretary General of the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) Professor Mamdouh Gabr, who passed away in August 2014, its golden medal and an appreciation certificate for his distinguish service for the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
The honoring of Professor Gabr by the Spanish Red cross was on the sidelines of the 12th Mediterranean Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, which was held in San Marino in Italy from 25 to 28 May under the motto “Our Principles, our Move.” The award was received by Dr. Yehia Tamoum ERC Secretary General’s advisor, and the head of ERC delegation in the conference.
The Mediterranean Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies convenes the National Societies of the Mediterranean and other National Societies who have historical or geographical links with the region, thus creating a link between countries of Europe, Middle East and North Africa. At least 150 delegates from 26 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in the Mediterranean region attended the conference this year.
Discussions during this conference included the fundamental principles of the international movement and their link to humanitarian diplomacy, disaster response and preparedness, climate change and environment, social effects of the economic crisis, assistance and protection to migrants, migration and youth, Human trafficking and social inclusion, and the promotion of a culture of nonviolence and peace.
In 1991 and until his death, Professor Gabr acted as the Secretary General of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society. His contributions to the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement are countless. He played a pivotal role on the International level, fostering relationships between societies especially between Middle East and Africa as well as strongly empowering the youth and volunteers at national and regional levels.
Professor Gabr was elected in 1999 president of the International Conference of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and was a board member for several years. He brought HIV to the attention of the IFRC and he was key in the bringing Magen David Adom and Palestine Red Crescent National Societies into the Movement.
