Egyptian Red Crescent to host MENA Consultation Meeting on Migration

The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) will host a consultation meeting on the migration in the Mediterranean for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on August 1 and 2, 2015. 

The meeting will be attended by the national societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent in Iraq, Jordan,  Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia and representatives from IFRC offices in Geneva, Beirut, Tunisia, and Palestine as well as experts on migration from Italian and Belgium Red Cross are expected to attend the meeting. Prof. Moamena Kamel the Secretary general of the ERC will be a head of the Egyptian delegation.

The meeting aims to gather the national societies in MENA, as their countries are mostly affected by migration in the Mediterranean, in order to have a clear understanding of the objective of Migration Coordination Cell that was created by the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. 

The Migration Coordination Cell was established by IFRC to further contribute to alleviate the suffering of migrants in perilous situations and bring to them the necessary support, assistance and protection. Over 6,000 people are believed to have lost their lives attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean in the last 18 months.
